cleaning to prevent the spread of covid

Given the current situation, the world is in with the growing spread of COVID-19, the importance of keeping your office space & home clean and infection-free should be one of your top concerns. Here we will explain the cleaning process and some tricks and tips for you to use as well.

“COVID-19 spreads primarily through respiratory droplets or contact with contaminated surfaces. Exposure can occur at the workplace, while travelling to work, during work-related travel to an area with local community transmission, as well as on the way to and from the workplace.”

– WHO.

As stated from WHO a common spreading factor is ‘contaminated surfaces’ There are 2 methods that we do to ensure a COVID safe environment; cleaning and disinfecting which surprisingly are two different processes;

  • Cleaning; involves using manual labour to remove germs and any physical/organic matter from a surface.
  • Disinfecting; involves using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces.

It’s good to practise to use a combination of both methods as inadequate cleaning of the surfaces prior to disinfection, can minimize the effectiveness of the disinfectant as dust and dirt can form a barrier preventing the disinfectant from reaching the surface.

What equipment should you use?

When it comes to cleaning first, we suggest you use the following for hard or soft surfaces;

  • Detergent
  • Water
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Steam cleaner
  • Gloves (to protect your hand from touch the surfaces)

Then for disinfecting, we suggest to use;

  • Disinfectants with a minimum of 60% alcohol
  • Gloves
  • (Keep in mind we don’t recommend to use disinfect on soft surfaces as disinfectant works best on surfaces with extended contact)

Now we know how the cleaning/disinfecting should be done, the question is how often?

Its recommended to have your office/home cleaned daily while also paying extra attention to areas/surfaces that are touched frequently, some examples are;

  • Door handles
  • Desks
  • Toilets
  • Light switches
Remember you should clean first then disinfect.
